Reading Reflection No. 1

What surprised me the most about Steve Jobs was that he called experimenting with LSD "one of the two or three most important things" that he is done in life. Jobs was also invited by Bill Clinton to sleep in Abe Lincoln's bedroom at the White House and his last words on his deathbed were, "Oh wow, oh wow, oh wow," while looking steadily over his family's shoulders. I admire Steve Jobs because he created a company that is very popular today and surrounded himself with potentially talented people. I least admired Steve Jobs when he denied paternity to his daughter, Lisa Jobs. Jobs encountered failure in 1985 after poorly selling his Apple Lisa computer. Jobs was fired from his job and found a new company called NeXT. After Apple bought the company's software, Jobs was rehired for the job again.

Steve Jobs exhibited competencies while working with Apple, such as his perfectionism. His co-workers would throw in some ideas for the success of the company, but he rejected most of them. He was a founding father of Apple and Pixar. In fact, he sold his car to raise start-up money. Also, Jobs got people to believe in him – even after disagreeing – people eventually saw his vision.

In the book it mentioned that he got frustrated when the iPad followed debut. In the book, people complained about "not having a chord or this or that." It did not really show how Steve Jobs handled situations of the debut of the iPad.

I would ask: what made you practice Zen Buddhism? and what inspired you to become an entrepreneur?

I think Steve Jobs idea of hard work is to follow your dreams and to practice until it makes perfect, since he was a perfectionist. I believe his dream was to change the technology world and to aspire a great sense of developing a way of future communication. I agree with what he believes because the future depends on us and I believe we can change the future. Also, the more you practice, the more perfect you can make it.

  1. Great job on the reading reflection! It is very fascinating to learn that Steve Jobs experimented with LSD, and he even thinks its one of the most important things he has done. I also do not admire Steve Jobs’ rejection of his daughter. I did not know Steve Jobs was such a perfectionist. I agree with your interpretation of Steve Jobs’ meaning of hard work. He definitely transformed the technology world. Practice does make perfect, and we should keep practicing to improve daily.

  2. You did a great job on this reflection! I recently bought this book and have yet to find time to read it but I am definitely going to do it for another reading reflection assignment in this class! Steve Jobs is an incredibly interesting man, both from a business standpoint and a personal standpoint. Great job at breaking down this book!
